Note that this is the new, 5-knife rating!

1 knife = Stay at home. Order Domino’s. Don’t bother.

2 knives = Edible, but passionless and instantly forgettable. Major problems abound.

3 knives = Good. A place to revisit.

3.5 knives = Good with occasional bouts of greatness. A solid choice to patronize on a regular basis. There are key missing ingredients that hold it back from greatness.

4 knives = A great restaurant. Great consideration has been given to service, plating, seasonality (when applicable), freshness and inventiveness.

4.5 knives = Amazing. A restaurant that is consistently great in every aspect of the experience. A few unexpected details put a smile on your face. Mistakes are very, very rare.

5 knives = Phenomenal. Service, food, menu, atmosphere, plating are virtually flawless. A profound dining experience every time.

I'm sure sad to see Joel Brasserie close. Atlanta needs this kind of quality. I wonder where chef Cyrille Holota will go. He will be missed.

Does QPR, (quality to price ratio), apply to restaurants as it does to bottles of wine? I think that Holeman and Finch as well as Park 75 give much more "bang for the buck" than Bacchanalia.

QPR certainly applies to restaurants. The question is whether I factor the QPR when doling out ratings. This is a lot harder than it seems. It's even harder when you try to directly compare two restaurants: one with say, a 3.5 knife rating versus one with 4.5. It's a no-win situation. That's why I just try to adhere to the rating descriptions that we've outlined above which can imply QPR without committing us to it.

That being said, QPR certainly influences where we go eat. Suffice it to say that there's a reason why I've only been once this year to Bacchanalia, but I can't seem to stay away from places like H&F, 4th & Swift and Abattoir.
